NORTH and SOUTH WAZIRISTAN / LAKKI MARWAT: On Tuesday, a series of tragic events in North and South Waziristan and Lakki Marwat claimed the lives of eight individuals, including five security officials and three children.
In North Waziristan, a military officer, Captain Muhammad Osama bin Arshad, 24, from Rawalpindi district, was martyred during an exchange of fire with militants, according to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The security forces effectively targeted the militants, killing two of them. A sanitisation operation is ongoing to clear the area of any remaining threats. The ISPR affirmed the determination of Pakistan’s security forces to eliminate terrorism, highlighting that such sacrifices strengthen their resolve. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur expressed their sorrow over Captain Osama’s martyrdom.
In South Waziristan, three soldiers were martyred during an intense gunfight with militants. The ISPR identified the fallen soldiers as Sepoy Asadullah, 30, from Matiari district; Sepoy Muhammad Sufyan, 28, from Dera Ismail Khan district; and Non-Combatant Bearer Zain Ali, 24, from Bahawalnagar district.
In Lakki Marwat, unidentified assailants opened fire on a vehicle near Kurram Bridge on the Indus Highway, resulting in the deaths of four family members, including a police officer. The victims were Head Constable Saadullah, 37, and his nephews Abdul Rehman, 8; Sufyan, 12; and Sayyam, 12. They were traveling from Titterkhel to Peshawar for medical treatment when the attackers struck. A minor, Farmanullah, was injured and taken to a hospital in Peshawar. Saadullah was stationed at the Shaheed Haibat Ali Khan Police Station in Darra Pezu town.
Following the attack, a significant police presence arrived at the scene and initiated a search for the perpetrators. Personnel from the Counterterrorism Department and investigation experts gathered evidence. Saadullah’s body was transported to the police lines for funeral prayers before being taken to Titterkhel for burial with full official honours. The attack occurred near a dense forest along the Kurram River, locally known as ‘Darga’.
In a separate incident in Tappi, North Waziristan, three women were injured when a mortar shell struck a police officer’s house. The injured women were taken to the hospital for treatment.
These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges and sacrifices faced by Pakistan’s security forces and civilians in the region.
