Amal Hamad, the Palestinian Minister of Women’s Affairs, urged women worldwide to stand in solidarity with Palestinian women during her address to journalists at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
Hailing from Gaza, Hamad emphasized the dire situation faced by her people, describing it as a struggle against genocide, ethnic cleansing, and an unprecedented war of starvation and thirst perpetrated by Israel. She lamented the destruction of essential resources caused by Israel’s military actions and stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire to allow Gaza residents to receive vital relief, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
During a side event focused on women in Gaza, Hamad’s impassioned plea resonated with the audience, as evidenced by applause and chants of “Free, free Palestine.” She called for international pressure on Israel to swiftly achieve a ceasefire and alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza.
