A parliamentary panel on Tuesday approved “The Islamabad Women University Bill, 2021” to set up the first-ever women’s university in Islamabad.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Federal Education met at the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) under the chairmanship of MNA Mian Najeeb-ud-Din Awaisi.

MNA Ali Nawaz Awan who moved the bill in parliament, told the committee that a separate university for women in Islamabad is a must as it will allow women, who may not otherwise be able to pursue higher education due to religious or cultural reasons, to continue their studies. He said this will allow the government to further its aim of providing equal access to education.

The government had already announced its plan to establish the first women’s university, The Postgraduate College for Women, at Islamabad’s sector F-7/2.

QAU vice chancellor Dr Mohammad Ali also briefed the committee on the ranking of QAU. He said that the university was at 378th in the world on the QS World University Rankings and remains among the top 100 leading varsities of Asia.

He said the university was also going to establish the department of sports sciences and a department of media studies.
