Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan visits Makli Necropolis and the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta and the Chaukhandi tombs in Karachi.

On Sunday Abdul Fatah Sheikh, Director Archeology and Museums and his team from the Sindh Antiquities department, organized a tour of some of the most famous historical sites in the province for Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan Benedict de Cerjat.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the Makli Necropolis is one of the largest burial sites in the world containing about half a million tombs dating back to the 14th and 18th centuries. According to UNESCO, “The unique assemblage of massive structures presents an impressive order of monumental buildings in different architectural styles.”

The Shah Jahan Mosque, known for its unique tile work, was built in the 17th century during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan

Famous for their elaborate sandstone carvings done in similar style to the Makli tombs, the Chaukhandi necropolis is also estimated to be from around the same time.
