Pakistanis form a human chain to thank the UN

For declaring March 15 as International Day to Combat Islamophobia thousands of Pakistanis in the Jhang district formed a human chain to thank the UN.

The event was organized by the ‘Muslim Institute,’ an Islamabad-based research institute that has long resisted Islamophobia. It took place in Punjab’s Jhang district.

The participants, clothed in white shalwar-kameez, executed a variety of formations varying in length and width from 100 feet, including “Thank You UN” and “Islam is Peace.”

Flags from 57 Muslim countries were prominently placed around the UN symbol.

On March 15, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution declaring March 15 as International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

On behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Pakistan tabled the resolution (OIC). It’s the same day as the Christchurch massacre, which occurred in 2019 when a shooter opened fire inside a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Sahibzada Sultan Ahmed Ali, the event’s main organizer, claimed that the increasing tide of Islamophobia posed a serious threat to humanity and international peace.

He expressed gratitude to the United Nations for approving the resolution and requested that the OIC pass an anti-Islamophobia convention. He believes that in the future, non-Muslim countries would be pressured to adopt the proposed agreement.
