NA wants concerted efforts to improve the agricultural sector

ISLAMABAD: Lawmakers in the National Assembly voiced serious concern over the country’s agriculture sector on Tuesday, saying that unless concentrated efforts are taken to improve the sector, farmers will be unable to survive.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, the newly elected Speaker of the Lower House, presided over the session.

Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), speaking on a point of order, requested the government to give agricultural incentives. “Serious efforts should be made to address the farmers’ difficulties.”

Rana Muhammad Ishaq Khan of the PML-N said it was the government’s primary responsibility to focus on improving the agriculture sector, given the problems that farmers endure. “Fertiliser should be delivered on time to farmers, who play a critical role in the national economy.”

Mehar Irshad Ahmad Khan asked the government to take the necessary steps to unlock the actual potential of the agriculture sector, recommending the establishment of a parliamentary committee to improve the sector, which he described as the country’s backbone.

“During his tenure as deputy speaker, Qasim Khan Suri bulldozed the whole legislation and approved much legislation despite the absence of the required members,” he claimed,
