On the occasion of Eid ul Fitr, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif stated that all prisoners’ sentences will be reduced by two months across the country, as well as bringing the benefits of jail officers and staff up to par with those of the police.
On Sunday, he announced during a visit to the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
Shahbaz Sharif also announced the formation of a Jail Reforms Committee, which will be chaired by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, to develop a comprehensive plan to help prisoners and reform the jail system as a whole.
The Committee would be composed of Chief Secretaries from all provinces, jail officials, education prisoners, and their relatives, he stated.
The Prime Minister, speaking at the event, stated that it is the government’s role to assist prisoners in becoming valuable members of society when their sentences are over. He urged jail officials to make appropriate use of all available resources.
