The United States president has announced that Pakistani-origin Khizr Khan will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
This is the highest US civil award and is given to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavours.
Khan came into the spotlight after challenging ex-US President Donald Trump’s knowledge of the American constitution.
Khizr Khan is the father of US Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.
He is also a Gold Star father and the founder of the Constitution Literacy and National Unity Center. Khizr Khan is a strong advocate for the rule of law and religious freedom, and he has served on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom under President Biden. He will be receiving the Presidential Citizen’s Medal at the White House on July 7.
