The price of a 20-kg bag of flour in Karachi has increased to a new high of Rs2,500, the highest price in the entire nation, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The cost of flour in the city was Rs2,400 for a 20-kg bag last week. For the first time in the nation’s history, the price of flour has increased to Rs2,500 for a 20-kg bag.

One kilogram of flour now costs Rs125 in Karachi, almost twice as much as it does in the federal capital and Punjab, according to the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week that concluded on December 22.

A weekly comparison shows that:

  • The 20-kg flour bag price in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Quetta has witnessed a surge of Rs100 increasing the rates to Rs2,500, Rs2,420, and Rs2,320, respectively.

The cost of flour jumped by Rs 70, Rs 50, Rs 40, and Rs 40 in Bannu, Peshawar, Larkana, and Sukkur, respectively.

In Islamabad and Punjab, a 20-kg bag of flour has been seen to cost Rs 1,295. However, for the combined consumption group for the week under review, the SPI saw a decline of 0.11%.

According to the PBS data, the SPI for the combined consumption group was 217.39 points as opposed to 217.64 points over the previous week.

The SPI for the total consumption group increased by 28.76% when compared to the same week the previous year.

The weekly SPI, with the base year 2015–16 =100, covers 51 necessities for all expenditure categories across 17 urban centers.
