For the past few days, chicken meat prices have been rising abnormally in various regions of the nation, exposing the administrative control that the provincial and district governments have over food prices.
Particularly in Lahore, people were spotted leaving chicken outlets empty-handed as sellers protested a shortage of chicken from distributors and poultry farms. After the situation was made public and the supply of chicken feed and soybean feed dried up, the price of broiler chicken meat skyrocketed.
On January 5, the Pakistan Poultry Association has already called for nationwide demonstrations against the ongoing price increases for broiler chicken.
The association’s spokesperson said their members would assemble at Thokar Niaz Baig and stage a protest for the acceptance of their demands. He said the poultry feed had almost vanished from the local markets because of unannounced restrictions on the import of soybean and other raw material.
The representative claimed that for the previous two and a half months, ships that were led by raw materials had been subject to a $400,000 daily fine.
In the meantime, Lahore and other areas of Punjab saw an Rs5 per kg hike in the price of broiler chicken flesh, bringing it to Rs524.
In Lahore, chicken flesh may be purchased for more than Rs550 per kg.
In addition, the cost of chicken meat has increased in Multan, Karachi, and other cities across the nation.
