Panama: Sunrise on the Pacific, Sunset on the Atlantic
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterLinkedinWhatsapp

Panama is a Central American republic located on the Isthmus of Panama, a narrow land bridge between North and South America. The tropical country, which includes the isthmus and more than 1,600 islands off its Atlantic and Pacific coasts, is best known as the location of the Panama Canal, which runs through its midsection.

It is also noted for its natural beauty, diversified plant, and animal life, which includes hundreds of bird and tree species, and vibrant music and culture.

Panama, home to various Native American tribes such as the Guaym, Kuna, and Chocó, became the Pacific’s first Spanish colony. It was celebrated as “the door to the seas and key to the universe,” and it served as a staging location for the Spanish conquest of the Inca empire in the 1530s, and it was a transshipment point for gold and silver destined for Spain until the 19th century.

With the independence of Colombia, which had previously governed Panama, from Spain, Panama became another staging site, this time for ocean-going migrants to California’s gold fields.

Location of Panama

Costa Rica and Colombia border this Central American country, which is located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. Panama is a small land bridge, often known as an isthmus, that connects North and South America. Panama is about the same size as South Carolina.

Why is it the only place sunrise on the pacific ocean and set on the Atlantic

Because of the Isthmus of Panama, where the “tail” of Central America meets the northern section of South America:

Because of that cool-looking sinusoidal bend, the Pacific Ocean is actually to the EAST of the Atlantic Ocean over a relatively limited area. It’s the only site on the planet where two continents meet in such a way.

Other noteworthy anomalies can be seen on maps, albeit most of these concern political rather than geographic alignments. The cities of Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, for example, are near a point where Canadian territory meets US territory. In addition, for historical reasons, the Kaliningrad area of Russia is totally within the EU!
