On Friday, Qatar was awarded host of the 2027 men’s Basketball World Cup, adding to the country’s growing reputation for hosting major global sporting events.
The women’s version will be held in Germany in 2026, according to basketball’s governing organisation, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
Qatar held the men’s football World Cup in November and December, and it will now host the NBA’s championship competition for the first time.
All matches will take place at existing venues in Doha, Qatar’s capital.
“We are very happy to be able to award the Basketball World Cup 2027 to Qatar,” stated FIBA president Hamane Niang.
The 2023 men’s Basketball World Cup draw will be place on Saturday in Manila, Philippines.
This year’s World Cup will be held in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan from August 25 to September 10.
Qatar was not one of the 32 qualified teams. Spain is the current world champion.
