A photograph of an Rs10,000 banknote has gone viral on social media, with commenters speculating that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is planning to issue higher denomination notes.
While the speculations ignited a debate over the local currency’s frail health and its parity with foreign currencies, there are several critical elements that reveal the assertions are untrue.
Yaseen Anwar, whose name appears on the Rs10,000 currency image circulating on social media, was the 17th governor of the SBP from October 19, 2011 until January 31, 2014.
It should be noted that the current SBP governor’s name appears on any new banknote issued by the central bank.
Through TheNews.com.pk, an official from the SBP encouraged the general people not to believe such rumors and to verify the veracity of any news item linked to banknotes on the SBP website and social media accounts.
In 2018, erroneous information about the Rs10,000 note was also spread.
