The 9th of Muharram is being marked with solemnity and sanctity across Pakistan today (Friday) to pay respect to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) – the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – and his companions in Karbala.
Today, Taziya, Alam, and Zuljanah processions will be held in all major cities and towns across the country in commemoration of the martyrs of Karbala and Nohas, marsiayas, and pulsing sounds of self-flagellation will fill the streets.
Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), along with 72 of his companions, including friends and family members, were slaughtered at the battle of Karbala in Iraq in 61 AH (680 AD) by Yazid’s army after Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid authority.
Security has been increased around the country in preparation for the mourning processions and majalis. Police and Rangers, as well as women and gents scouts, were stationed along the path of the main processions.
In Islamabad, 1685 security personnel will be deployed to secure the major procession, while in Lahore, roughly 17000 security officers and surveillance cameras will be used for security.
The government has decided to stop mobile phone service in Karachi, Islamabad, and 14 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts.
Strict security measures are planned to create a peaceful atmosphere on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, and special transportation arrangements have been devised around the country.
