Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, was detained when an 800-year-old mummified corpse was discovered inside a food delivery bag in Peru.
Julio addressed the mummy as “Juanita,” his supposed sweetheart, and informed investigators that it sleeps in his bedroom and that he looks after it.
After the mummified corpse was examined, scans revealed that the remains belonged to a male.
“I look after it. “It’s almost as if she were my spiritual girlfriend,” Bermejo remarked in an interview with a local news site.
He also revealed that the mummy had been in his family for 30 years, but he did not tell where or how his father had obtained the artefact.
The mummies were located in a delivery bag labelled ‘Pedidos Ya,’ a well-known Latin American meal delivery app when authorities discovered Bermejo.
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture revealed photos of the pre-Hispanic mummy, which is estimated to be 600 to 800 years old.
Contrary to Bermejo’s first opinion, ministry experts stressed, “It’s not a Juanita; it’s a Juan.” The mummy was recognised as that of a man who had lived for at least 45 years and was discovered in a foetal posture wrapped in bandages.
Bermejo angrily denied any intention of selling the mummy, claiming that he was simply satisfying his companions’ interest in the old artefact.
Peru is recognised for its rich archaeological sites and historical artefacts, most notably the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a 15th-century masterpiece near Cusco.
