On Monday, an accountability court in Islamabad granted former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif permission to record his statement in the Toshakhana case.

The accusation names former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari, and former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani for allegedly getting expensive vehicles from the treasury by paying 15% of the actual price.

An accountability court designated the former prime minister a ‘proclaimed offender’ in the Toshakhana reference in 2020, and a permanent arrest warrant was issued for his continuing non-appearance.

Currently, Nawaz Sharif is on bail in the Toshakhana case.

During today’s hearing, AC Judge Muhammad Bashir initiated proceedings on the Toshakhana reference involving former president Asif Ali Zardari, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and others. Legal representatives of these prominent political figures appeared before the court.

Nawaz Sharif’s counsel, Qazi Misbah, requested the court’s permission for his client to provide a statement in the Toshakhana case.

In response, the NAB prosecutor stated that they need time to review the plea. The judge questioned, “What is the problem in recording Nawaz Sharif’s statement?”

Subsequently, the court granted permission for Nawaz Sharif to record his statement in the case, and the hearing was adjourned until November 30.
