On Tuesday, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed hope that the Supreme Court (SC) will provide justice in the ‘murder case’ of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto faced a death sentence during the era of former military ruler General (retired) Ziaul Haq. The initial elected prime minister of the country was accused of murdering his political rival, Nawab Mohammed Ahmed Qasuri, leading to a trial. Despite numerous petitions and appeals for clemency, including requests from various Heads of States, Bhutto was executed on April 4, 1979.

In the latest developments, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed gratitude to Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa for revisiting the controversial death sentence imposed on his grandfather after 11 years. Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Bilawal emphasized the significance of this case as a litmus test for the judiciary. The PPP is seeking answers to questions raised in the presidential reference filed in 2011 by then-president Asif Ali Zardari.

Acknowledging that the past cannot be changed, Bilawal underscored the party’s hope for justice in the case. He mentioned the inability to bring back Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, and other martyred PPP workers but appealed to the Supreme Court to rectify the historical record and restore public trust in state institutions.

During the hearing of the presidential reference, former president Asif Ali Zardari, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sherry Rehman, and other senior party leaders were present. The call for justice in the Bhutto case remains a focal point for the PPP, seeking resolution and historical correction through legal avenues.
