Sarfaraz Bugti, a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has ascended to the position of Chief Minister in Balochistan, marking a significant chapter in his political journey. Born in 1981 to Mir Ghulam Qadir Masori Bugti, a tribal elder with a keen political sense, Bugti inherits a province grappling with terrorism and developmental disparities.

Despite his father’s prior affiliation with General Zia’s Majlis-e-Shoora, he later aligned with the PPP, reflecting a unique political trajectory. Enduring external pressures during General Musharraf’s era, Ghulam remained committed to the PPP until his passing.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Bugti entered politics in 2013 after completing his education at Lawrence College in Murree. Initially an independent candidate in the general election, he later joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), eventually becoming the interior minister.

In this role, Bugti prioritized initiatives to foster peace and order in Balochistan. Despite facing 17 attacks and personal losses, he facilitated modern upgrades for the Levies Force. While he didn’t secure electoral victory in the 2018 general elections, he earned a Senate seat, establishing himself as a prominent voice in the upper house.

Recognizing his accomplishments, Bugti was appointed caretaker federal interior minister in 2023, advocating for a positive global image for Pakistan. In preparation for the 2024 elections, he resigned from his caretaker role and announced his candidacy under the PPP in the Balochistan Assembly.

Despite the PPP’s significant influence, spanning the Centre, Sindh, and Punjab, Bugti faces the paramount challenge of restoring peace in Balochistan — the country’s largest province — and addressing the longstanding sentiments of neglect among its people. The 2024 elections will serve as a critical juncture in Bugti’s mission to bring stability and progress to this strategically vital region.
