Justice Maqbool Baqar (Retd) is positioned as the leading candidate for the upcoming role of Sindh Governor, according to sources familiar with the matter. Maqbool Baqar, who previously served as the caretaker chief minister of Sindh, emerges as the most prominent contender to succeed the current Sindh Governor, Kamran Tessori.
Baqar acknowledged that there had been expressions of support regarding his potential appointment as Sindh Governor. However, he clarified that he had not received official confirmation about the matter. Notably, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari asserted that his party had no objections to any specific individual for the governorship of Sindh.
Furthermore, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari mentioned that discussions between PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were ongoing regarding appointments to various positions. He assured that positions discussed by both parties would be assigned accordingly, with the possibility of accommodating MQM-Pakistan in positions not initially deliberated.
Earlier reports suggested that PML-N and PPP proposed Senator Khushbakht Shujaat for the Sindh Governor’s position, while MQM-P preferred the continuation of Kamran Tessori. Justice Maqbool Baqar (Retd) assumed the role of Sindh caretaker chief minister on August 14, 2023, following the dissolution of the Sindh Assembly by Governor Kamran Tessori on the advice of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on August 11.
