Apple announced that it complied with Chinese authorities’ directives by removing Meta’s WhatsApp and Threads apps from the App Store in China. The apps were withdrawn on Friday following concerns about national security raised by Chinese officials, although specific details were not disclosed.
The decision to remove these apps occurs against the backdrop of heightened U.S.-China tensions over trade, technology, and national security issues.
In a related context, the U.S. has considered banning TikTok, a popular app owned by the Chinese tech company ByteDance, citing national security risks. Despite TikTok’s widespread use in the U.S., apps like WhatsApp and Threads are not widely used in China, where Tencent’s WeChat dominates the messaging app market.
While other Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger are still available for download in China, access to these foreign apps is effectively blocked by China’s extensive “Great Firewall,” which limits the use of international websites like Google and Facebook.
