In a significant boost to Pakistan’s economic prospects, China has reaffirmed its commitment to support the country’s economic development. This assurance was provided by China’s Minister of Finance, Lan Fo’an, during a high-level meeting in Beijing with Pakistan’s Finance Minister, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari.
During the meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted the crucial role of China-Pakistan financial and banking cooperation within the framework of the two countries’ all-weather and iron-clad strategic partnership. He expressed profound gratitude for China’s steadfast economic and financial support to Pakistan, which has consistently proven invaluable.
Minister Aurangzeb elaborated on the Pakistani government’s economic reform agenda, emphasizing key initiatives aimed at strengthening tax revenue generation, implementing energy sector reforms, and advancing State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) reforms to achieve sustainable economic growth.
Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari, the Minister for Energy, provided an overview of ongoing reforms in the energy sector. He emphasized the government’s determination to address operational and organizational challenges effectively, aiming for significant improvements in energy efficiency and reliability.
Minister Lan Fo’an praised Pakistan’s dedication to achieving a robust economic recovery. Drawing from China’s own experience of extensive structural reforms over the past three decades, he suggested that Pakistan could benefit from emulating some of these strategies. Lan underscored the enduring and profound partnership between China and Pakistan, highlighting the potential for further cooperation.
Following the meeting with Minister Lan, Senator Aurangzeb, and Minister Laghari held discussions with the President of China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE) at its headquarters. These talks focused on the latest reform agenda of the Pakistani government and the ongoing and future projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Both Pakistani ministers lauded SINOSURE’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s development, particularly during the first phase of CPEC. They expressed confidence that SINOSURE would continue its full support for completing current and new projects under the second phase of CPEC, which is increasingly driven by private sector initiatives.
This visit and the reaffirmation of support from China mark a significant milestone in the deepening economic collaboration between the two nations. It also underscores the importance of strategic cooperation in achieving shared goals of economic stability and growth. The successful engagement between Pakistani and Chinese officials paves the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation, promising a brighter economic future for Pakistan.
