An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi discharged Bushra Bibi, wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, from 12 cases linked to the May 9 riots. The court rejected the police’s request for her physical remand.
Represented by lawyer Salman Safdar, Bushra Bibi’s defense argued against the police’s demand for her remand, while the investigation officers involved in the May 9 cases appeared before the court. After considering arguments from both sides, ATC Judge Malik Aijaz Asif cleared Bushra Bibi of all charges.
Earlier, on August 16, the police had sought her physical remand, but the ATC ruled that remand could not be granted unless the accused appeared before the court.
In a related development, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a new reference against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi regarding the Toshakhana case. The couple is accused of purchasing and selling a jewelry set valued at Rs75 million, allegedly misusing gifts received from foreign dignitaries during their time in office. The reference was submitted by NAB officers Mohsin Haroon and Waqar Hassan to an accountability court in Islamabad.
