Meta Platforms has announced the launch of its innovative AI tool, Movie Gen, which enables users to create high-quality videos from text and image prompts. This new tool positions Meta as a competitor to Sora OpenAI in the realm of synthetic media generation.
Movie Gen boasts the ability to produce videos of up to 16 seconds in length, utilizing its advanced “highest quality media format.” Additionally, it includes a range of video editing features to enhance user experience.
Although Movie Gen is not yet commercially available to app users, Meta asserts that it “outperforms similar models in the industry,” reaffirming the company’s commitment to advancing AI research and sharing its findings with the broader community.
Representing Meta’s “third wave” of synthetic AI innovations, Movie Gen merges various media formats, including images, videos, audio, and 3D animation. The system has been trained using a combination of proprietary and publicly available datasets.
In terms of editing functionality, Movie Gen allows users to seamlessly add, remove, or replace visual elements and make substantial alterations, such as changing backgrounds or styles. This sets it apart from traditional editing tools that often require specialized skills or generative tools that lack precision.
Meta emphasizes that Movie Gen is intended to enhance creativity rather than replace artists or animators. The long-term goal is to empower users to create high-definition videos and audio with ease.
The company has also indicated potential future integrations of Movie Gen with its social media platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, further expanding its accessibility and usability for creators.
