In a remarkable achievement, a student from a government school has secured the top position in the 2024 Matric Science annual examinations, ending a 28-year dominance by private institutions.

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) announced the results on Friday, with Hafiz Abdul Rafay Tariq earning the top spot. Rafay scored an impressive 94.55%, achieving 1,040 out of 1,100 marks as a student at the Delhi Government Boys Secondary School in Karimabad. His father, Tariq Mehboob, is a mathematics teacher at the same school.

This victory marks the first time since 1996 that a government school has claimed the top position in the matric science exams. The second and third positions were held by students from private schools: Rumaissa Imran of Al-Khalil Model School in Malir secured second place with 1,037 marks (94.27%), while Rukhsar from Little Folks School in North Nazimabad took third with 1,025 marks (93.18%).

Of the 163,012 registered candidates, 131,614 (81.24%) passed the exams, with 23,943 students earning an A1 grade and 45,357 receiving an A grade. Female students also excelled, with 63,767 passing and 15,616 securing A1 grades.

The success of Hafiz Abdul Rafay Tariq and the Delhi Government Boys Secondary School highlights the potential of public education and the dedication of teachers like Tariq Mehboob. This achievement serves as an inspiration for government schools across the country.
