IT Ministry Prepares to Launch Fiberization Policy for Enhanced Internet Connectivity

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) is advancing plans to introduce a comprehensive National Fiberization Policy aimed at revolutionizing Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.

In collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the ministry is conducting a thorough risk assessment of the country’s existing fiber optic network. This evaluation will identify weaknesses and guide upgrades to create a more resilient and efficient system.

A key objective of the policy is the extensive deployment of fiber optic networks, ensuring high-speed broadband access nationwide. By bridging the digital divide between urban and rural regions, the initiative aims to provide underserved areas with improved internet connectivity, fostering greater digital inclusion.

The policy is also set to strengthen Pakistan’s digital ecosystem by supporting the adoption of advanced technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies require robust, high-capacity networks, and the initiative seeks to position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global digital economy.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to benefit key sectors such as education, healthcare, and e-governance, contributing to socio-economic progress across the country. Additionally, the policy emphasizes the “Make in Pakistan” initiative by encouraging local manufacturing of optical fiber and related components, reducing dependency on imports and stimulating domestic economic growth.

This effort is also aimed at improving Pakistan’s ranking in global digital benchmarks, such as the ICT Development Index and the Broadband Development Index, signaling progress in the nation’s digital transformation journey.
