Gillespie Dismisses Javed’s Instability Claims Amid Coaching Controversy

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie has launched a scathing attack on Pakistan’s interim head coach Aaqib Javed, calling him a “clown” over his remarks regarding Pakistan’s coaching instability. The verbal spat erupted following Pakistan’s disappointing early exit from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where Javed blamed frequent changes in the coaching staff and selection committee for the team’s struggles.

Speaking at a press conference, Javed pointed out that Pakistan has gone through nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in just two years, attributing the lack of consistency at the administrative level as a key reason for the team’s failure.

“We have changed nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two years or so,” said Javed. “You put that formula on any team in the world, I think they will also be in the same situation. Until you get consistency right from the top down to the bottom, from the chairman down, then your team will not progress.”

Pakistan, despite hosting the Champions Trophy this year, failed to advance beyond the group stage, suffering defeats to India and New Zealand, while their final game against Bangladesh was washed out.

Gillespie Hits Back, Accuses Javed of Power Moves

Gillespie, who represented Australia in 71 Tests and 97 ODIs, was quick to ridicule Javed’s comments, dismissing them as “hilarious.” Taking to social media platform Threads, the former fast bowler accused Javed of maneuvering behind the scenes to secure a permanent coaching position.

“It’s a bit rich of Aaqib Javed to blame ‘instability’ when he himself went behind the backs of Gary Kirsten and myself to take over the Pakistan team,” Gillespie wrote.

The remarks have added to the growing criticism of Pakistan’s cricket administration, which has struggled with leadership consistency. The revolving door of coaches and selectors has been a long-standing issue, with analysts and former players urging the PCB to adopt a structured, long-term approach to team management.

Aaqib Javed’s Coaching Ambitions Under Scrutiny

Aaqib Javed, a former Test pacer, has been vocal about his aspirations to become Pakistan’s full-time head coach. Before his appointment as interim coach, he had been coaching Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, his tenure has already come under fire, especially after Pakistan’s poor Champions Trophy campaign.

The latest war of words between Gillespie and Javed further highlights the instability within Pakistan cricket, with tensions running high over coaching appointments and team performance.
