Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla announced that starting April 3, only vehicles with Ajrak-designed number plates will be allowed on roads throughout the province. No other number plates will be considered valid after this date.
This decision was shared during an implementation meeting chaired by Chawla, who also oversees taxation and narcotics control. The meeting was attended by Secretary Excise Muhammad Saleem Rajput, DIG Traffic Police Karachi Ahmed Nawaz, officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA), Safe City, and other relevant departments.
Streamlining Enforcement and Payments
Chawla emphasized the urgent need for a joint action plan to address the payment of fines for violations of motor vehicle taxes and traffic rules. To facilitate compliance, the minister announced the establishment of counter desks at the Civic Center and Excise Department’s Facilitation Centers, enabling a one-window operation for vehicle owners. Traffic police at check posts will also ensure timely acquisition of the Ajrak-designed plates.
Integrated System for Fines and Taxes
In his directives, Chawla highlighted the integration of traffic challans with Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) taxes. He urged mutual support between the Excise Department and traffic police to streamline the collection of pending challans and MVR dues.
He also proposed that vehicle transfers and tax payments should be made conditional upon the settlement of pending challans. The Excise Department will maintain a comprehensive record of unpaid challans to assist traffic authorities.
Digital System for Faster Processing
The minister stressed the importance of activating the online system to instantly identify pending MVR taxes and challans. This will allow payments to be processed from a single point, minimizing delays.
Chawla directed the Sindh Excise Secretary to immediately draft a proposal for implementing these measures and ensuring compliance with the new system.
With the introduction of Ajrak-designed number plates and enhanced enforcement measures, the provincial government aims to ensure better regulation of vehicle registration and road safety across Sindh.
