Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) leader, Siraj-ul-Haq, has submitted his resignation due to the party’s performance in the recent general elections.
In his resignation letter, Haq acknowledged the party’s vigorous campaigning efforts during the election period but expressed disappointment over the lack of favorable outcomes.
The JI failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly during the 2024 elections, with independent candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerging as the dominant force.
Although Haq tendered his resignation on Monday, it has not been immediately accepted. Party sources revealed that a meeting of the JI’s council will be convened in Lahore on February 17 to deliberate on whether to accept or reject his resignation.
Haq has served as the party’s leader since 2014, having been re-elected for another five-year term in 2019. His tenure was expected to conclude in March 2024.
