Apple pointed to issues with specific apps like Instagram and Uber, post-transfer background processing, and unidentified faults in iOS 17 as the causes of complaints of overheated iPhone 15s over the weekend. A new software update, iOS 17.0.3, has been made available by the business. According to the patch notes, this version “addresses an issue that may cause the iPhone to run warmer than expected.”
Apple identified two fixes that were addressed on both iOS and iPadOS in an update outlining the security updates for this version (via 9to5Mac). One is a kernel exploit for a local attacker that Apple claims “may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6,” as well as a patch for a libvpx bug that could allow someone to remotely take control of a device and that has recently been patched in Chrome and Firefox apps.
Your device should automatically download the update, which Apple lists as a 423.2MB download when you check for the most recent update.
There had been some speculation that the sweaty iPhone experience was caused by hardware problems, possibly from the iPhone 15’s more potent processor or titanium components, but Apple’s statements to Forbes and other outlets linked the issue primarily to the software, in addition to heating that could occur with USB-C chargers.
Please let us know whether you are experiencing a hot iPhone 15 or if things have started to cool down after installing the update.
To address issues some new owners faced when transferring data, Apple previously published one post-iPhone 15 launch patch, and it is currently beta testing a more important iOS 17.1 upgrade.
