Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, has been nominated for the prestigious men’s Player of the Month award for May 2023 by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Alongside him, two other batters, Najmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh and Harry Tector of Ireland, have also been nominated.
Babar Azam once again showcased his exceptional skills and leadership during Pakistan’s home ODI series against New Zealand. After winning the first two matches of the five-match series in late April, Pakistan continued their success and clinched two more victories in early May, ultimately emerging as 4-1 series winners.
It came as no surprise that Pakistan’s positive results were largely influenced by Babar’s outstanding performances with the bat. On May 3, he formed a remarkable century second-wicket partnership with Imam-ul-Haq, contributing 54 runs off 62 balls. His team posted a competitive total of 287/6, and in the field, Babar utilized six bowlers as New Zealand was bowled out for 261 in response.
In the subsequent match just two days later, Babar elevated his performance even further, earning the Player of the Match accolade in Pakistan’s commanding 102-run victory, securing a 4-1 series lead. Babar compiled a splendid knock of 107 runs off 117 deliveries, achieving his 18th ODI century. His remarkable innings propelled the hosts to a formidable total of 334/6.
Babar Azam’s consistent contributions with the bat, combined with his strategic captaincy, have made him a strong contender for the men’s Player of the Month award for May 2023.
