DHAKA – Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan, currently in Pakistan for a two-match Test series, has been implicated in a murder case in Dhaka.
According to reports, the case was filed against Hasan, who also holds a leadership position within the former ruling party, Awami League. The complaint was lodged by the father of the deceased, Rafique Islam.
The case also names Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 154 others. The complainant alleges that his son, Robail, was killed during a protest rally on August 15, when police opened fire on the demonstrators.
Shakib Al Hasan was elected as a Member of Parliament under the Awami League banner in January of this year. The situation has escalated following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister on August 5, after widespread student protests against controversial amendments to the quota system. She subsequently fled to India.
