Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has been elected as the new head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The intra-party polls of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) took place on Saturday, following the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan. Utilizing an online app, voters exercised their right to vote.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan emerged as the nominee for the top slot, selected by the PTI founder a few days prior. PTI election commissioner Niazullah Niazi confirmed that former federal minister Omar Ayub Khan secured the position of secretary-general, while Yasmin Rashid, a former provincial health minister currently in detention, was elected as PTI Punjab president.
Simultaneously, incarcerated individuals Haleem Adil Sheikh and Ali Amin Gandapur were elected unopposed as party presidents for the Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces.
Earlier in the week, Barrister Ali Zafar announced that party Chairman Imran Khan would not be participating in the intra-party polls. Instead, Barrister Gohar Khan had been nominated for the role of party chief.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside Raoof Hasan and Barrister Gohar, PTI Senator Ali Zafar shared the development. He clarified that the party chairmanship was temporary, with Imran Khan expected to resume the role once his disqualification, stemming from the Toshakhana case, is overturned.
Zafar emphasized that the former premier had instructed the party to conduct intra-party polls, underscoring the inseparable link between PTI and Imran Khan. “PTI is Imran Khan, and Imran Khan is PTI,” he asserted during a media interaction outside the Election Commission of Pakistan in Islamabad.
