China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa on Wednesday mentioned that the 88 per cent work on 720-megawatt Karot Hydropower Project, CPEC’s first hydropower project has been accomplished.
Situated on the Jhelum River on the boundary between Punjab and Azad Kashmir, the project is anticipated to be accomplished by April 2022, Bajwa wrote on his official Twitter handle.
He mentioned that the funding in the project amounted to $1,780 million whereas 5,000 local people were directly employed in the construction.
The project was earlier expected to be accomplished in 2021 and can generate 3.2 billion units of low-cost, clean electricity for Pakistan.
In September 2018, the plant completed a river closure and entered into the comprehensive construction phase. It goals to annually meet the electricity needs of about 2 million local households and deliver about $20 million in taxation.
