In Peshawar, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud commences a program targeting unregistered vehicles. The crackdown particularly looks to identify Traffic violations, underage drivers, and illegal vehicles.
Rickshaws, buses, wagons will be detected. More specifically, the operation bans the complete use of rickshaws between Pir zukuri bridge and Surrey Pul. It also seeks to stop the plying of buses and wagons on BRT routes. Accordingly, there are designated areas to drive each of these vehicles. Rickshaws functioning outside of these areas will be targeted.
Directions to seize unregistered rickshaws operating in provincial capitals was made; as well as those with photocopied permits and registration papers. The meeting also decided to entirely seal the supply of Rickshaws from Punjab and the arrest of these suppliers. The vehicles acquired on the basis of operating illegally would be scrapped. SSP stated, “Over 300,000 rickshaws and loaders operated in the provincial capital, but in the case of their seizure, the traffic police lacked spaces to keep such a large number of vehicles.”
Further, legal action will be taken against drivers of rickshaws, buses and wagons who are under the age of 21. The crackdown will be running for a continuous 20 days until 29th May.
The overall aim of this programme is to streamline the traffic and reduce traffic congestion. Additionally, this will improve road safety.
The meeting that passed these directions ad verdict included the district administration. It was chaired by Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud and attended by deputy commissioner Afaq Wazir, SSP (traffic) Saud Khan, officials of the Regional Transport Authority and excise department, and representatives of transporter unions.
