Daewoo Express Set to Launch 200 Electric Intercity Buses in Pakistan

Daewoo Express, a prominent inter-city transport service provider in Pakistan, is set to gradually introduce 200 Electric Vehicle (EV) buses in the next two years, along with 1000 EV rickshaws for Karachi and Lahore in collaboration with Sazgar Engineering. This move, aimed at adopting cutting-edge transport technology, could mark the first EV-based inter-city bus service in Pakistan.

Sheriar Hassan, General Manager at Daewoo Express, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental protection and improving air quality through green technology. The proposed projects, expected to secure multi-million dollar financing by January-February 2024, align with the company’s responsibility as a market leader to transition from fossil fuel-based vehicles to eco-friendly electric options.

The 200 electric buses are planned for short inter-city routes, operating on a maximum distance of 225 kilometers to avoid inconvenient stops for charging. The buses are expected to start operations in the summer of next year, covering 17 short routes across Pakistan.

Daewoo Express is also collaborating with Sazgar Engineering for the manufacturing of 1000 EV rickshaws to be operated in Karachi and Lahore. The introduction of EV rickshaws aims to contribute to improving air quality and reducing noise pollution in these major cities.

While the initiative is lauded for its positive impact on the environment and transportation, experts suggest that Daewoo Express should consider using renewable energy sources, such as solar power, for charging its electric buses to maximize the environmental benefits.

If successful, the pilot project of 200 electric buses may lead to Daewoo Express considering entry into the electric bus manufacturing business. The company is currently in talks with several Chinese bus manufacturers for the purchase of the buses.

Experts and officials from the Ministry of Climate Change express support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of electric vehicles. The project also aligns with efforts to address air quality issues and contribute to sustainability goals in Pakistan.
