On Sunday, 12th May, a conference of international donors was held in Kuwait following the escalating killings in Gaza. The death toll has exceeded 35,000 in Gaza as per their health ministry. Regardless of the social media uproar and vigorous international protests. Cessation of this violence or implementation of ceasefire remains elusive. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
“I repeat my call, the world’s call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and an immediate surge in humanitarian aid”. He further added that a “ceasefire” would be the first step to recovery, not the entire remedy.
The conference was organised by the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) and the UN’s humanitarian coordination agency OCHA. The IICO general manager Bader Saud Al-Sumait stated that the aim of this was “to mobilise efforts to support life-saving humanitarian interventions in the Gaza Strip, and to support the prospects for early recovery for the population”. The plan is to distribute this over the timespan of 2 years or more. The different components through which this cash will be donated are reportedly, life-saving interventions, shelter, health, education, and economic empowerment.
