Google and Microsoft's Electricity Consumption Surpasses That of Over 100 Countries

Google and Microsoft, two of the world’s largest technology giants, have been identified in a recent study for their significant electricity consumption, surpassing that of more than 100 countries combined.

In 2023 alone, these tech giants collectively consumed 24 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, a figure exceeding the energy usage of entire nations. For context, this amount is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of Azerbaijan.

The economic scale of these companies is highlighted by their massive energy consumption. Google reported an annual revenue of $307 billion in 2023, while Microsoft earned $211 billion, dwarfing the GDP of many countries.

Comparatively, countries like Iceland, Ghana, and Tunisia each consume around 19 TWh annually, while Jordan’s electricity consumption stands at 20 TWh. Countries like Libya (25 TWh) and Slovakia (26 TWh) slightly exceed the energy consumption of Google and Microsoft.

The study underscores the substantial energy requirements of large corporations, particularly driven by data centers and the escalating use of artificial intelligence technologies, which contribute to environmental concerns.

Both Google and Microsoft have committed to enhancing their sustainability efforts, pledging to transition to renewable energy sources by the end of the decade. They are actively investing in green technologies to mitigate their environmental impact.
