Google previously believed that AI would be the future of search. With that being said, we see that the talked about future is evidently here. Google is rolling out new “AI Overviews” commonly known as the SGE or Search Generative Experience. Billions of users worldwide will be able to review short AI-generated summaries above the search results. In short Google will be redesigning its search engine with AI.
As per Liz Reid, “What we see with generative AI is that Google can do more of the searching for you,”. Furthermore, she explained, “It can take a bunch of the hard work out of searching, so you can focus on the parts you want to do to get things done, or on the parts of exploring that you find exciting.”
Google will be using the Gemini model specialized to summarize the web and show you the answer. It’s even using Gemini to design and populate the search engine result page.
Moreover, Reid said that not every search will get AI-based results, as most of the searches do not require them. “If you just want to navigate to a URL, you search for Walmart and you want to get to walmart.com. It’s not really beneficial to add AI.”
Reid thinks that Gemini can be more useful and helpful in complex situations. For instance, in the sort of things that you need to do multiple searches for, or in the type of things that you won’t even think of Googling.
