Google is introducing a feature called the Search Generative Experience (SGE), which allows users to create images from text prompts. This feature is similar to Microsoft’s offering using OpenAI’s DALL-E model. With SGE, users can type a query into Google’s search bar, and the system generates images based on the text. These images can be refined to match the user’s intent.
Google’s SGE is powered by the Imagen family of AI models. Users who opt into the Search Labs program can utilize this tool. The generated images will be available not only through text searches but also within Google Images results. They will have metadata labels and embedded watermarking to indicate that they were AI-generated.
Google is committed to using this technology responsibly and has policies in place to prevent the generation of inappropriate or harmful images. Users under the age of 18 won’t have access to image generation.
In addition to image generation, Google is also adding the ability to create written drafts directly from the search bar using SGE. Users can specify the length and tone of the text generated by their query and export it to Google Docs or Gmail.
Google plans to continue improving SGE over time. While this technology has potential, it is still being refined, and user feedback will shape its future developments.
