Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Tuesday that the present administration’s term will end on August 9, 2023, and authority will be transferred to a caretaker government.
The premier made the announcement today during an event to pay respect to Shuhada and Ghazi in the Army Auditorium at GHQ in Rawalpindi.
In his speech during the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid glowing tribute to the Shuhada, Ghazi, and their families for their selfless efforts and contributions to the motherland’s defence.
He also praised the Armed Forces for their role in defending the country’s territorial integrity and vigorously combating the threat of terrorism throughout Pakistan.
“We must never forget that the peace and freedom we have today are the result of the ultimate sacrifices made by these valiant sons of the soil.” “I commend their families for giving up their loved ones for Pakistan,” he said.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered special financial assistance cheques to 70 families of martyrs and 30 War Wounded Persons. Laptop computers were also handed to Shuhada’s academically pursuing wards.
Earlier, the Prime Minister was greeted by the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, upon his arrival at the GHQ.
The Prime Minister was presented with the Guard of Honour after meeting with the Principal Staff Officers. In addition, he placed a floral wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada.
The National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9 (tomorrow) following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s farewell statement.
After addressing the lower house of parliament, the prime minister will submit a summary to President Dr. Arif Alvi for the dissolution of Pakistan’s 15th National Assembly.
PM Shehbaz Sharif stated on Sunday, during a mass gathering in Kasur, that the NA would be dissolved on August 9, just three days before the lower house of parliament completed its five-year constitutional mandate.
The current National Assembly’s full term ends on August 12, and if it completes its mandated period, elections will take place within 60 days. However, the Constitution requires that elections be held within 90 days if the parliament is dissolved before the end of its term.
If the summary is moved to dissolve the lower house on August 9 (tomorrow), the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be obligated to hold elections within 90 days.
Before the assembly is dissolved, the government and the opposition must reach an agreement on a caretaker government to fill the void until the next general election and the installation of an elected new government.
