On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader Fawad Chaudhry.
The session in which the PTI leader was brought was presided over by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.
Following the order, officials attempted to arrest Fawad again as he was leaving the courtroom. The PTI leader, dressed in a shalwar kameez, was seen stepping into a white SUV in video footage.
However, after avoiding the arrest attempt, he sprinted back into the courtroom, clearly out of breath.
On May 11, Fawad was apprehended outside the Supreme Court (SC), two days after PTI Chairman Imran Khan was also imprisoned.
According to the party’s statement, the detention occurred despite Fawad being granted protective bail by the Islamabad High Court till May 12.
Meanwhile, the IHC granted bail to PTI leader Shireen Mazari, who was arrested last week under Section 3 of the Public Order Act.
Following Khan’s detention, Pakistan saw a new wave of unrest last week, with demonstrators ransacking state and private property, causing the government to deploy army soldiers in two provinces as well as the federal capital.
At least nine people were killed in the rioting, according to police and hospitals, while hundreds more cops were hurt.
The authorities arrested multiple people, including key leaders of Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as well as his fans, with sources claiming that over 4,000 people were imprisoned.
Ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was released on bail, dismissed the ensuing violence but called for rallies as he moved ahead with his call for elections. Earlier attempts to hold elections failed.
