National manufacturing facilities’ manufacturing of mobile phones has overtaken the country’s imports of cell phones.
Between January and July 2021, domestic manufacturing plants produced 12.27 million mobile phones, whereas imported mobile phones produced 8.29 million.
This development shows a good response to the PTA’s Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Authorization legal structure, which led to the manufacture of 12.27 million devices in a space of 7 months, notably 4.87 million 4G smartphones, during the first year of policy implementation.
The effective adoption of the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS), as well as supportive official regulations, such as the mobile manufacturing program, has provided a favorable climate for mobile device manufacture in Pakistan.
It has also benefited Pakistan’s mobile sector by eliminating the fraudulent device market, creating a fair operating ground for commercial organizations, and building consumer trust through the development of standardized legal routes for all types of device imports.
It is crucial to note that the Government of Pakistan implemented a thorough mobile manufacturing strategy in order to promote and impress manufacturers to set up shops in Pakistan.
In light of the policy, the PTA released Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations on January 28th, 2021. So far, 26 firms have received MDM approval, allowing them to produce mobile devices in Pakistan. Among the firms are well-known names such as Samsung, Nokia, Oppo, TECNO, Infinix, Vgotel, Q-mobile, and others.
