On Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a 120-day decrease in prison sentences.
The provincial government announced a “special remission under Rule 788 of the Sindh Prisons and Corrections Service Rules, 2019 on the recommendations of the Inspector General of Prisons, Sindh” in a notification.
Sentences are reduced for convicted convicts in Sindh’s many prisons and correctional facilities.
This does not apply to convicts who were given extraordinary clemency on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha during the current calendar year.
Furthermore, remission will not be granted to inmates convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state actions, terrorist activities, rape, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, dacoity, or those sentenced under the Foreigners Act of 1946.
Today (August 14), the country celebrates Independence Day with great zeal and fervour, particularly in the twin cities.
The national flags could be seen flying on major routes, including the federal capital’s motorways. Special programmes have been organised by cultural and literary institutions to commemorate Independence Day.
The national flag was also flown at important public buildings, heritage sites, and monumental structures around Pakistan on Independence Day. To commemorate the occasion, several locations were lighted with colourful lights.
