Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and several other senior officials, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
The fatal incident occurred as President Raisi, FM Amir Abdollahian, and other dignitaries were returning from an inauguration ceremony for a dam situated on Iran’s border with the Republic of Azerbaijan. The helicopter crashed amid heavy fog in the mountainous terrain of the Varzaqan region in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday afternoon.
Reports from the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed that East Azarbaijan Province’s Governor Malek Rahmati and Mehdi Mousavi, the head of Raisi’s guard team, were also aboard the ill-fated aircraft.
A large-scale search and rescue operation was promptly initiated in the fog-covered mountain area of East Azerbaijan province. The wreckage was located by search teams on Monday morning.
