Masjid al-Haram, the grand mosque surrounding Islam’s holiest site, the Kaaba, has been officially recognized as the world’s most expensive building. According to a recent report by British media outlet The Telegraph, this iconic structure tops a list of the globe’s 20 most costly buildings. Notably, two of the priciest buildings are situated in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with Masjid al-Haram leading the pack and closely followed by the Abraj Al Bait, also known as the Clock Towers.
Masjid al-Haram, located in the heart of Mecca, holds unparalleled significance in the Islamic world. The mosque covers an expansive area of 400,800 square meters (99 acres) and has the capacity to accommodate up to four million worshippers simultaneously. The site features both indoor and outdoor prayer spaces and is home to the revered Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) and the Maqam Ibrahim. It is important to note that access to this sacred mosque is restricted exclusively to Muslims.
Adjacent to Masjid al-Haram stands Abraj Al Bait, or the Clock Towers, which is noted for several world records. This complex includes the world’s tallest clock towers and the tallest hotel globally. The clock face of Abraj Al Bait, with a diameter of 43 meters, is the largest of its kind. The building reaches a height of 1,972 feet, making it the third tallest structure in the world.
According to The Telegraph, the construction cost of Masjid al-Haram is estimated at a staggering $100 billion, establishing it as the most expensive building globally. In comparison, the Abraj Al Bait’s construction cost is approximately $15 billion. These figures underscore the architectural splendor and cultural importance of Mecca’s landmarks, reflecting their monumental status in both religious and structural contexts.
