Islamabad’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, has arrived at the residence of PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan following a ‘raid’ on Chief Justice of Pakistan’s (CJP) order. The incident occurred while Barrister Gohar was attending a Supreme Court hearing regarding his party’s electoral symbol, the “bat.”
During the hearing, Barrister Gohar informed CJP Qazi Faez Isa about the raid, claiming that his son and nephew were subjected to “torture,” and the police confiscated a computer and documents. Requesting to be excused from the hearing, Barrister Gohar left the court. Chief Justice Isa expressed concern, stating, “Whatever happened should not have happened.”
The additional attorney general, Chaudhry Amir Rehman, assured the court he would look into the matter. Barrister Gohar returned to the court later, informing CJP Isa that the situation was serious. The chief justice directed the additional attorney general to resolve the issue.
The additional attorney general informed the court that he had spoken with the home secretary and the Islamabad IGP, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, who were investigating the incident. CJP Isa instructed Barrister Gohar to inform the additional attorney general about the details before addressing the court.
Regarding the police attack, Barrister Gohar emphasized that the “limit has been crossed.” CJP Isa responded, “If we cannot resolve the issue, then you can tell us.”
The Islamabad police, in a statement, claimed they received a tip about wanted criminals at Barrister Gohar’s house. Upon reaching the location and realizing it belonged to Barrister Gohar, the police returned.
Later, IGP Islamabad appeared before the court, and CJP Isa deemed the complaint “completely intolerable.” The chief justice ordered the IGP to attend to the matter immediately. IGP Akbar explained that the police had a tip about proclaimed offenders at the location and, upon discovering it was Barrister Gohar’s house, they withdrew.
CJP Isa directed IGP Akbar to personally inquire about the incident from Barrister Gohar’s family members. The IGP, along with the PTI chairman, visited Gohar’s residence, and Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan committed to investigating the police raid personally. Barrister Gohar’s son briefed the IGP about the incident, with further action pending completion of the court proceedings.
