On Friday, heavy fighting was witnessed in Gaza as Israel’s military resumed combat operations against Hamas, alleging a violation of a temporary truce with rocket fire towards Israeli territory. The seven-day pause, initiated on November 24 and extended twice, allowed for the exchange of hostages in Gaza and facilitated humanitarian aid entry.
Just before the truce’s 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) deadline, Israel intercepted a rocket from Gaza, triggering additional sirens near the border. Despite no immediate claim of responsibility, the Israel military confirmed airstrikes on Hamas targets after the truce concluded. Reports indicated air and artillery strikes across Gaza, with images on social media displaying plumes of smoke over densely populated areas, such as the Jabalia camp.
The recent escalation follows Israel’s vow to eliminate Hamas in response to the October 7 attack. In retaliation, Israel launched intense bombardment and a ground invasion, resulting in a significant toll. Palestinian health authorities, recognized by the United Nations, reported over 15,000 confirmed casualties in Gaza.
