On Wednesday, Japan approved an $18.5 million (JPY 2.831 billion) grant for Pakistan’s flood management initiative, “Flood Management Enhancement in the Indus Basin,” through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
A signing ceremony at Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs formalized the agreement. The project aims to minimize human and economic losses from flooding, improve the accuracy of flood forecasts, and support data collection critical for disaster risk reduction.
In addition to restoring river structures damaged by the 2022 floods, the project includes building a network of hydrological and hydraulic observation systems along the Indus River and its tributaries. This initiative also aims to strengthen the capacity of flood management institutions to mitigate future flood risks.
