Supreme Judicial Commission (SJC) has approved the appointment of Chief Justice Musarrat Hilali to the Supreme Court. This unanimous approval, granted in a meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, makes Justice Hilali the first woman judge from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to serve on the apex court.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court recommended her elevation, and President Arif Alvi had previously approved her appointment as PHC chief justice on May 8. With a law degree from Khyber Law College of the University of Peshawar, Justice Hilali began her legal career in 1983 and later moved to the high court. In 2006, she became an advocate of the Supreme Court.
Throughout her career, Ms. Hilali has held various positions within the legal community, including serving as the female secretary of the Peshawar Bar Association in the 1990s. She has also held positions such as vice president and the first female General Secretary of the bar.
The approval of Justice Hilali’s elevation to the Supreme Court comes as a significant milestone, highlighting the growing representation of women in the judiciary of Pakistan.
