KARACHI – Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has announced an ambitious tree-planting initiative set to commence within the next two weeks. The campaign aims to plant 140,000 saplings across the city, reflecting a significant commitment to enhancing Karachi’s green spaces and addressing environmental challenges.
In a comprehensive effort to rejuvenate urban greenery, the Commissioner has enlisted the support of the Forest Department, municipal authorities, and various private institutions. These stakeholders have pledged their full cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the campaign. Deputy commissioners will play a pivotal role in this initiative, each tasked with overseeing the planting of 10,000 saplings in their respective districts.
The campaign’s objectives extend beyond merely increasing the number of trees. It aims to enrich highways, parks, green belts, and other public spaces throughout Karachi. This initiative is aligned with broader government efforts to combat environmental degradation and promote urban sustainability.
During a recent meeting to discuss the campaign, various participants including deputy commissioners, representatives from the Forest Department, and officials from Uzma Municipality, KDA, MDA, LDA, and several Cantonment Boards were present. Additionally, organizations such as DI Site Limited, KPT, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Mazar Quaid Management Board, Port Qasim Authority, town administrations, Abad, Site Limited Chambers of Commerce and Industries, and multiple NGOs focused on environmental protection were involved.
The collaborative nature of this campaign highlights a unified approach to tackling Karachi’s environmental challenges. By engaging both the public and private sectors, the initiative seeks to foster a collective responsibility toward improving the city’s ecological footprint and enhancing its overall quality of life.
Commissioner Naqvi has emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration in this campaign, calling on all involved parties to contribute actively. The afforestation project not only aims to beautify Karachi but also to support the government’s ongoing environmental improvement efforts, creating a greener, more sustainable urban environment for all residents.
